5 Fantastic Family Friendly Restaurants in Morzine

There is no shortage of restaurants in Morzine, it’s a pretty big place after all, but what you may be surprised at, is just how many really good restaurants there are.  If you go, rest assured you will be spoilt for choice.

Here’s my pick of my favourite family friendly restaurants serving up delicious food and all with good service too:

Best for Atmosphere – Le Tremplin

Right next to the Pleney Bubble and at the bottom of the steep red, sits Le Tremplin Brasserie.  With tables out front and in full sun (on a sunny day) it has great views of skiers making their way down the challenging red, some stylishly so and others clearly wishing that their efforts and falls weren’t for all to see!

The restaurant is always bustling, so its advisable you book in the morning before heading on to the slopes.  Expect the usual tartiflette, pasta dishes and burgers along with a reasonable priced daily plat du jour at €14 and the biggest omelettes you have ever seen.  Steak with pepper sauce was my favourite, I have to say the french certainly know how to cook a steak!

Childrens meals which are served in bento boxes and include a choice of fish, steak or pasta, a small salad and a chocolate muffin are priced at €10.

As the skiing day comes to an end, this is the spot to soak up the apres ski with live bands and DJs.  See www.hotel-tremplin.com

Best for Walkers – Le Vaffieu

Not everyone comes to Morzine to ski or Snowboard, there is also a big walking scene, with its lifts giving access to the higher ground and a network of groomed trails in the winter.

You can get a return at the Pleney Bubble for €7 which will take you up the mountain and from there it’s an easy uphill walk, about 20 minutes to Le Vaffieu restaurant.  Of course if you’re skiing, it’s just at the top of the Folliets chair lift.

The restaurant has terrific views of Mount Blanc and there is usually a photographer based at the top who will take your picture with the most stunning mountain backdrop.

You can get snacks out at the front, while the restaurant serves traditional gourmet french cuisine. The Duck in a pot, which is very much like a cawl, was particularly good, big chunks of vegetables and duck so tender it was falling off the bone. Children are also well catered for with a child’s menus available.

Portions are generous, so be warned, you may want a nap in one of their deckchairs afterwards rather than walking or skiing!  For more information visit www.facebook.com-leVaffieu

Best for Skiing to Les Gets – QG

Skiing across to Les Gets is easy as you can stick to blue runs the whole way, making it easy for beginners to sample a much wider piste network.  On the route down to Les Gets, QG is an based just above the town and bubble.  It has great service and dishes, ensuring it is always busy for lunch, with lots of locals also frequenting it.  Without booking it is virtually impossible to get in.

We had thick juicy burgers with seriously good chips, creamy mushroom pasta and cheesey tartiflette, all of which were really good.

The childrens portions were generous too and again priced at around €10. For more information visit www.facebook.com/Restauramt-le-QG

Best for Snacks (and sledging) – La Petite Ourse

The unpretentious La Petite Ourse, serves up snacks on paper plates and cans of beer with plastic cups, but it plays great music and has the best snacks going.  Think seriously thick juicy burgers, huge cones of moorish chips and unusual panini fillings such as curried chicken.  It also does hot dogs french style; essentially a sausage in a baguette.  The chips portions are huge, so definitely worth sharing.  Pascal and his wife are super friendly and even give you a shot with your food!

It’s placed just at the bottom of the kiddies Penguin Park making it an ideal spot for stopping for a bite with the kids.  To top it all off they have sledges you can borrow free of charge and a small slope to sledge down which is just in front of the restaurant so you can sit and watch while they have fun.

Have a look at the video of our 21 months sledging here – trust me it’s best with sound!

Best for Evening Meal – La Chaudanne

La Chaudanne, which is converted from an old barn, serves up classic french cuisine. Before dinner have a pre-dinner drink in the very stylish downstairs wine bar, where the sommelier will be able to advise you on the extensive wine list.  If not in the mood for the full menu you can book a table in the wine bar for the tapas menu.

We tried a very easy drinking wine from the local area and were given some crudités while we waited for our table upstairs.

The dining area is decorated mainly in wood, in keeping with it’s previous barn existence, with subtle lighting and with it always being packed, it is full of atmosphere.  The three course set menu is particularly good value at €23.

Sizeable starters of duck pate, onion soup and salad with waffles was followed by pork shoulder marinated in soya and sesame, which was divine.  The pork was melt in the mouth and came in a sticky sweet sauce packed with flavour, served with garlicky potato wedges and a smooth parsnip puree.  The pear desert, which was served with shortbread and chocolate sauce was heavenly.

Children are welcome and can have lasagne, chicken nuggets or fish followed by chocolate brownie and cream for a very reasonable €9.  For more information visit www.lachaudanne-morzine.com
